Alberta Wedding - Shaelene & Chris

Another hot and sunny August wedding in Edmonton Alberta.  Amara and I started the day at the chic Mousy Brown's Salon which, by the way, has fantastic photography on its walls, then into the limo for some champagne and onto the church for a beautiful ceremony.

Alberta Wedding - Courtney & Magnus

Here's number two, the second Alberta wedding that I photographed with my good friend Amara Dirks earlier this month.  It was hot and sunny again, must have been a high of 35 at least.  A gorgeous bride, beautiful bridesmaids and colourful dresses made this a fun one to shoot.  An outdoor ceremony and photos in a sunflower field just added to the beauty.  Thank you to Courtney and Magnus for making me feel so welcome and to Amara for another great weekend.

Alberta Wedding - Ashley & Joel

My Albertan friend Amara has graciously allowed me to photograph some weddings with her this summer, the first of which was Ashley and Joel's in June.  It was a hot and sunny 30-degree day but Ashley and Joel were great; agreeing with every suggestion we had for photos and even climbing over fences.  Photographing with Amara means getting dirty and sweaty and by the end of the day my feet were black and my new fancy shirt had arm pit stains... so much fun!  stay tuned for more crazy Albertan weddings this summer with the ever so talented Amara Dirks !

Storm Mountain Lodge

On June 18th 2009, Ed and I celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary. We had never been to Storm Mountain Lodge before but we had heard good things about it and decided to stay for a night. The lodge is only a 25 minute drive from our apartment in Banff and is now by far one of my favourite places in the area.

I believe there are 14 log cabins in total, all originally built in the early 1920's. A wood-burning fireplace, hand-crafted log bed and an antique claw foot tub are just some of the features that make these historic cabins so charming. Add a game of scrabble and some red wine and it was the perfect place for a romantic evening.

The main lodge is rustic with a huge stone fireplace and the most incredible food! Bake brie, Bison Tenderloin, Lamb Shanks and chocolate mousse for dinner and a fresh baked cranberry scone and a cup of delicious local coffee for breakfast.

As soon as I stepped foot inside this place I couldn't stop smiling; it should be named Brena & Edward's Lodge because it was perfect and we couldn't have asked for anything better. It will definitely be tough for the next place we stay to measure up to this!

Skoki Lodge - Lake Louise, Alberta

Skoki Lodge was built in 1930 and became the first commercial back-country ski lodge in Canada. It is located in Banff National Park and is only accessible by hiking or skiing the 11km trail from the Lake Louise ski area. At an elevation of 7100 feet, the lodge is surrounded by spectacular high alpine lakes and glaciers.  My last experience skiing into this historic place was back in 2001. With very little experience on cross-country skis, I was a little wary skiing 11km to the lodge, stopping in only long enough for a cup of tea and then skiing another 11km back out. It wasn't only the distance that had me worried but the fact that I was accompanied by four men that had been born on skis...for some reason I thought my skill level just wasn't up to par with the rest of the group! That trip did end with a few tears, many face plants and having to ski out in the dark, but as the saying goes, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. It's the morning of January 2nd 2007 and my husband and I are on the trail again, this time with a lot more confidence, some wider skis, and the reward of two nights at the lodge.
